This rare temple is located in the Khajuraho region of Madhya Pradesh. It is known as the temple of Hanuman and his wife Suvarchala. Here, devotees worship both Hanuman and Goddess Suvarchala together.
Who is Suvarchala, the wife of Hanuman?
According to religious beliefs, Suvarchala is considered the daughter of Surya, the Sun God.
The legend says that when Hanuman was receiving education from Surya, he needed to acquire a special form of knowledge that required marriage. To fulfill this condition, Surya married his daughter Suvarchala to Hanuman.
Interestingly, despite this marriage, Hanuman’s vow of celibacy remained intact.
The mythological story behind this marriage
It is believed that Surya taught Hanuman nine types of knowledge. The final and most important knowledge was related to the “Grihastha Ashrama” (householder stage of life), which could only be attained through marriage.
Thus, the marriage between Hanuman and Suvarchala took place purely for the purpose of gaining knowledge, not for a conventional marital life.
According to the story, Suvarchala chose a life of penance, and both fulfilled their respective spiritual duties.
