Apara Ekadashi 2026: This Sacred Fast is Believed to Free Devotees from Unknowingly Committed Sins

Apara Ekadashi is considered one of the most sacred and spiritually rewarding fasts in Hinduism. Observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Jyeshtha month, this Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. According to religious beliefs, devotees who observe this vrat with devotion and discipline may receive relief from unknowingly committed sins and experience peace, positivity, and spiritual growth in life.

The word “Apara” means “limitless” or “endless.” It is believed that the spiritual merit gained through prayers, charity, and worship on this day is immeasurable. In 2026, Apara Ekadashi will be observed on Wednesday, May 13. As per the Hindu Panchang, the Ekadashi tithi will begin on May 12 at 2:53 PM and continue through May 13. The fast will be broken on the morning of May 14 during the auspicious paran time.

Religious scriptures describe the greatness of Apara Ekadashi in detail. It is believed that observing this vrat can grant the same spiritual benefits as holy pilgrimages, yajnas, and large charitable deeds. Lord Krishna himself is said to have explained that this Ekadashi helps remove negativity and strengthens spiritual energy.

Devotees are advised to follow certain rules while observing the fast. Early morning bathing, worship of Lord Vishnu, offering Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, incense, lamps, and prasad are considered highly auspicious. Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama and the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” is also believed to bring blessings and inner peace.

During the vrat, devotees avoid tamasic food, rice, and negative thoughts. Many people observe a strict fast with only fruits or water. According to beliefs, observing this vrat with sincerity and self-control brings mental peace and spiritual positivity.

Reading or listening to the Apara Ekadashi Katha is considered an essential part of the vrat. It is believed that the fast remains incomplete without the katha. According to mythology, there once lived a righteous king named Mahidhwaj. His younger brother Vajradhwaj became jealous and killed him, secretly burying his body beneath a Peepal tree.

Due to his untimely death, the king’s soul wandered restlessly and troubled the people nearby. One day, Sage Dhaumya arrived and learned the truth through his divine vision. To free the king’s soul, the sage observed the Apara Ekadashi vrat and dedicated its spiritual merit to him. As a result, the king attained liberation from the ghostly state and achieved salvation.

This is why Apara Ekadashi is regarded as a vrat that destroys sins and grants moksha. Devotees also perform charity on this day by donating food, clothes, and money to the needy.

Religious scholars believe that in today’s fast-paced life, Apara Ekadashi is not only a religious observance but also a message of self-purification, positivity, devotion, and discipline. It inspires people to follow righteous actions and spiritual values in daily life.

It is believed that sincere worship of Lord Vishnu on Apara Ekadashi can bring happiness, peace, prosperity, and spiritual progress. Therefore, along with fasting, reading or listening to the sacred katha is considered highly important on this holy occasion.
